Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPhone to be released within two years, a Wall Street firm said today. Bank of America Merrill Lynch says Apple is working with Asian partners to make a whole new iPhone design, as reported by CNBC.
Senior analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote a note to clients today after meeting several Apple suppliers in Asia. “We expect the iPhones this fall to be largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past,” Mohan wrote, “Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.”

GoPro has entered into a licensing partnership with Jabil, a manufacturing services company known for its electronics design, the action camera company announced today. Jabil is going to use GoPro’s design and intellectual property to make camera lenses and sensors for third-party products. GoPro and Jabil collaborated on the Hero4 and have continued to work together since.
The products will include digital imaging and consumer-facing gear, but not any cameras that would directly compete against GoPro’s own devices. “Imagine a world where video conferencing, robotics, and even self-driving cars are powered by GoPro’s camera lenses and image sensors. Together, GoPro and Jabil can make this a reality,” said Sandor Barna, GoPro’s chief…

Sharp launched the Aquos S3 Mini in China today, a budget smartphone with average specs and an edge-to-edge screen design that looks surprisingly commonplace.
This is essentially the same design Sharp has been using for years. A few months ago, this design stood out for its narrow bezels and a screen that took up almost the entire front face of the device. But Sharp hasn’t changed much about its design in the past couple years. Meanwhile, a parade of new smartphones have adopted this very look. And so what until recently was a standout design now ends up looking… average.
The Aquos S3 mini has a 5.5-inch curved glass display with (gasp) a notch and a somewhat measly 87.5 percent screen-to-body ratio with a slightly higher than 1080p…

It’s been said that a tech company hasn’t made it big until it has its own bespoke font. Actually, no one has said that, but that won’t stop Netflix from unveiling Netflix Sans, its own custom typeface (via It’s Nice That). The font was created by the company’s in-house design team with type foundry Dalton Maag. Netflix will be using it for branding and marketing purposes going forward.
That brings Netflix into a shockingly large league of big technology companies with their own custom fonts, alongside Apple (San Francisco), Samsung (SamsungOne), Google (Roboto and Product Sans, because naturally Google has font fragmentation), and Microsoft (sort of, depending on how you score Segoe).

YouTube is adding a new dark theme to its mobile apps, starting with iOS today. To activate the new theme, simply tap the account icon, go to settings, select “dark theme,” and enjoy the new look.
YouTube previously added a dark mode to its desktop site last year, and the company says since then, it’s become one of the most requested features for its mobile apps. As the name implies, the dark theme inverts some colors on the YouTube UI, swapping out the white background of the standard theme for a more cinematic, blacked-out style.
The dark theme should be rolling out to iOS users today. An Android version of the update is “coming soon.”
