This Super Designey 3-Position iPad Stand

This iPad stand isn’t new, but it’s certainly the most unique I’ve ever seen:

Unsurprisingly it was designed in Switzerland, and is manufactured in Germany and Italy. I can’t take my eyes off of the thing, even as logic tells me there’s no way it would retain its positions with the hamhanded way I type on tablets. (I think my muscle memory was set at a young age using a 1970s push-dial phone with sticky buttons.)

Imagining the block of wood required to make one…

…I had to see how it was made. Thankfully manufacturer Yohann has posted a video, from milling the timber to finished product:

It looks to me like they’ve milled the stock to 10/4 or 12/4 (or whatever the European equivalent is) and yes, the shape does yield a fair bit of waste. But the company states that they plant two trees for every product sold—for every product, not tree used—and claim they’ve planted 26,352 trees to date.

Additionally, I wonder if the humped-shape piece of waste cut from the back of the stand is used to make their iPhone charging stand:

One caveat from the company, for those thinking of buying the iPad stand:

“Yohann iPad stands are made for uncovered iPads only and do not work with any fixed protective case. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, many cases on the market vary in thickness and shape, and it is impossible to make a YOHANN iPad stand that fits all. Additionally, we think the iPad is a beauty in design and material itself and should not be covered by a cheap-looking protective case.”

Well, the company is Swiss.
