Lighting Design from Ukraine: Kateryna Sokolova’s MOLD Lamps
Produced by Ligne Roset, these MOLD lamps are by Ukrainian industrial designer Kateryna Sokolova. Sokolova is co-founder and creative director of the brand NOOM and SOKOLOVA design studio, which designs furniture, lighting, hardware, electronics and environments.
The MOLD line consists of both the lamps and the same form rendered into vases. The forms were “inspired by the technological process of production,” Sokolova says.
“During the process of casting ceramics, concrete or plastic, or stamping metal, you often can see sprues and not accurate edges in the point of the joints of the molds. These not-nice defects of the manufacturing process inspired me to create this collection. The name, Mold, explicitly references its production method and retains its complete form with no final chipping away of offcuts.”
Sokolova and her studio are based in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
In recent days Kyiv has been under bombardment from Russian invading forces. As of this morning, ceasefire talks provide some hope the city will be spared.
