Unpassionate Engineer Discovers He’s a Brilliant Logo Designer

Gary Pohty earned his Bachelors in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, which “was never my passion,” he writes. Degree in hand, he spent a few years working as a project coordinator for a local electronics firm. But then he “discovered these small things called logos,” he explains, “and it was love at first sight.”

With dreams of becoming a logo designer, Pohty fired up an Instagram account, #onelogoaday, where he’d force himself to create and post a logo daily. Over time, he discovered he not only had a talent for typography, but also a knack for hiding relevant imagery within the letters in a brilliantly economic way.

It’s been three years and change since Pohty started the Instagram—where he’s now exceeded 1,000 logos and has nearly 90,000 followers. With the attention, Pohty was able to start his own design firm in his homebase of Shilong, India. “The amount of love, support and recognition I have received throughout this journey was totally unexpected,” he writes. “By God’s grace, I have also managed to turn this passion into a full time career and to be able to work with clients from all over the world.” Congratulations to Pohty!
