Similar to contrapposto, the German word spielbein means to stand with the weight on one leg, and the other out at an angle. Thus Speilbein is the name of this chair by German industrial designer Peter Otto Vosding.
Elegantly assymetrical, the chair’s skewed legs can be hooked over the crosspiece of an adjoining Spielbein, forming a bench.
While fixed benches can be handy, “a disadvantage is that they are bulky and can not be varied in length,” writes Vosding. “This is where Spielbein comes in.”
