Thinking of Moving Out of the City? Check Out Cheap Old Houses

CheapOldHouses.com is a website that lists, well, guess. Targeted at folks on a budget who want to get out of the city and are willing to move to small towns across the country, the site finds listings that are under $100,000, though some of them have a catch, as you’ll see with the two Syracuse properties we describe below.

Many of the listings are pretty architecturally interesting, and/or prompt fanciful speculation on what it would be like to live in such a space. Some examples:

$69,900. Middleburgh, NY

Fancy an abandoned church in upstate New York? At the very least, there’d be no doubt about where to put your TV in the “living room:”

$49,900. Winchester, IN

Check out the corner dormers on this one. I’ve never seen this design variant in my entire life. Sadly, there are no photos of the interior of that level; I’m super-curious to see what it looks like from the inside.

$2,500 (not a typo). Syracuse, NY

You can also get a fixer-upper like this, for just $2,500–If you can prove to the municipality that you’ve got the $74,000 required to renovate it.

$1,000 (not a typo). Syracuse, NY

This one’s got a sweet turret and costs just $1,000. Why? Because it’s got major water damage, and you’ll need to prove you’ve got the 200 large to cover the repairs.

$79,000. Ely, MN

This one’s pretty nuts–it’s a 28,000-square-foot abandoned community center going for less than 80 grand. Comes with “a cafeteria with kitchen, dishwashing and dishware that could serve hundreds of people,” a 5,000-square-foot auditorium and a space that used to house a library. And just look at that entryway–plenty of room to kick off your shoes, along with 250 other pairs.
