Long-haul trucks wait in line to enter a container terminal at the Port of Los Angeles in California. As noted in the book’s chapter on transportation, Trucks carry nearly 70 percent of freight tonnage in the United States and while they account for only 4 percent of vehicles in the country, they consume 25 percent of fuel. It is estimated that there are 3.5 million American truck drivers that cover nearly 140 billion miles on American highways each year.
