Polarity terrazzo in situ. Fibonacci Stone cheekily describe this new range like this: “Complex, random, and swarming with polarity – the hallmarks of any great political system. There are bent and straight, cool and warm, light and dark, and with the odd bit of red and green thrown in to keep it honest. Exercise your democratic right with this one – you know you can trust it.” Hahaha! With a pitch that slick, they definitely have my vote.
I mean, seriously now. How freaking hot are these campaign images? Like, VERY! What makes them even more impressive is Fibonacci’s commitment to their vision of upping the ante each time, and continually investing in and producing better products/ images/ ranges/ literally everything, especially during the f@$%*! global pandemic. In a time when most others are contracting, Michael and his team are continuing to provide us with the inspiration and tools that bring a breath of much-needed optimism. Kudos!
We live in a time of instant gratification. With everything literally at our fingertips, patience (and attention) has become the most precious and rapidly depleting commodity. But those of us who have been around the block once or twice before, those committed to greatness and creating outcomes of meaningful value, exceptional beauty and genuine longevity – think a little differently.
“Sometimes, it’s better to take things slowly – indeed, this must be one of the biggest collective lessons of our recent times,” says Michael Karakolis, Creative Director of Fibonacci Stone. “And, in the tale of the creation of these complex and layered new stone designs, we discover more about the design process at Fibonacci Stone, and also about the desire to meld contemporary aesthetics with ancient traditions. As they say, timing is everything.”
When conceiving the two latest designs in Fibonacci Stone’s ethereal Matter collection, Michael looked to create a place in between the old and new worlds of terrazzo. Never one for the breakneck speed of trends, he strives for a timeless balance, where the depth of design is evident. And this is precisely why we love these guys.
Ghosted and Polarity – new terrazzo colours from Fibonacci Stone Matter Collection. In case you care (which I know you do), I think these are officially my favourite additions to the Fibs range ever. So good!
“Ghosted and Polarity were challenging to develop, but really worth it in the long run, as they have added another dimension to our collection,” says Michael. “More and more, designers love to see the intricacies and layers in a material, and there is a lot going on in our products – even in the most seemingly subtle ones.”
With over 300 designs in various stages of production at any time, Fibonacci Stone has a wealth of material to draw upon – and designers are often delighted to be given a preview of an almost-released stone.
Ghosted and Polarity have already been well received by some of Australia’s top interior designers prior to their release – including Flack Studio and Plus Architecture – as well as Doherty Design Studio, who commissioned both for a very special, yet to be revealed, residential project.
Ghosted terrazzo in situ being casually awesome. This is how Fibonacci Stone describe their addition: “Ghosted’s subtle mix of greys, black and white have an otherworldly feel, as if to appear, then recede into the background once more. Tiny hints of pale clay and moss add complexity to this elegant and contemporary product.”
“It’s definitely not a showy ‘here I am’ kind of tile,” says interior designer Mardi Doherty of Ghosted terrazzo, who’s currently using the product in a very special residential project. “Instead it slowly reveals itself to you – we’re still seeing new things in this tile, even having worked with it for a number of months. What it does provide is a beautiful and very versatile base to build your design on.”
In describing her response to Ghosted, Mardi Doherty, Principal at Doherty Design Studio says, “What drew us in at first was the subtlety of this tile – the grey base exuded a sense of calm, warmth and softness that you don’t always see in terrazzo”.
The strength in the tile wasn’t limited to its base colour alone. “It appeared almost like a jewellery box of sorts – there was a beautiful mix of white and black aggregate, but on closer examination, we started to see pops of nude blush and moments of green,” says Mardi. “These unexpected surprises created an added layer of complexity and interest that made us extremely excited to use this product.”

Similarly, the appeal of Polarity was its slow-burn reveal. “We always saw Polarity as the moody, dramatic cousin to Ghosted, however, much like Ghosted it was the unexpected moments and layering that we found really captivating,” says Mardi. “Rich pops of cinnamon are deftly woven throughout the tile – when you see this en masse it may be the first thing that you are drawn to, however, as with Ghosted, not only did it provide a wonderful base for us to build on from a design perspective, we also loved the thought of someone living with this tile in their home and it still surprising them and revealing these little hidden moments to them years down the track.”
