Milanese designer Elena Salmistraro’s unique creative ability and Florim Group’s technical research prowess have resulted in Chimera – a new ceramic collection for CEDIT – Ceramiche d’Italia, a brand from the Florim stable of companies.
Offering entirely original and expressive interpretation, Salmistraro has reinvented the ceramic product in a unique, individual way laden with symbolic meaning. Highly decorative, Chimera invites sensory enjoyment. The large porcelain stoneware slabs create a fantastic universe inspired by nature and whimsy, featuring very tactile and striking embossed or debossed designs. The result is unlike anything previously offered by CEDIT.

Chimera ‘Decoro Ritmo Beige’ Moodboard.
Chimera ‘Decoro Ritmo Azzuro’ Moodboard. Ritmo explores a dialogue between the textiles designed by Bauhaus masters Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers.
In Greek mythology, Chimera was a hybrid four-legged creature with an appearance of a lion and dragon with a goat’s head grafted onto its central trunk. The collection’s decorative inspiration is based on this mythological beast, the result of the imaginary combination of different creatures.
Born in 1983, Elena Salmistraro is Milan’s Politecnico alumni and artist and designer with unparalleled communicative power. With this project, large ceramic slabs become the perfect backdrop for her inspiration. Through a three-dimensional process made possible by innovative technology, the collection reproduces the texture of leathers and fabrics, creating an original, highly tactile layered effect.
‘Decoro Colore Bianco’ installation showcases a spotted base juxtaposed with bold repeated silhouettes.

‘Decoro Ritmo Beige’ explores textiles designed by Bauhaus masters Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers.
Chimera develops four graphic themes – Empatia, Radici, Ritmo and Colore – with motifs that blend different patterns and colour codes. In Empatia clown faces are mixed with Art Déco references; in Radici different leather textures are used; Ritmo explores a dialogue between the textiles designed by Bauhaus masters Gunta Stölzl and Anni Albers; and Colore’s spotted base is juxtaposed with a bold presence of repeated silhouettes.
The collection is a set of original ceramic coverings laden with symbolic meaning, completed with a series of neutral, undecorated slabs that offer ultimate flexibility.
Always on the lookout for new talents and interested in exploring the intersection of art and design, CEDIT has identified Elena Salmistraro as a leading contemporary creative spirit.
“This collection is an introspective work,” explains Salmistraro, “focusing on my life and the way I design. Chimera is like a book with four different chapters: I set out to differentiate these graphic motifs to create four totally different stories.”
Of her collaboration with CEDIT, Salmistraro describes the collaboration as very stimulating. “It was a wonderful challenge that allowed us, together, to create something new, experimental and fascinating.”
Chimera large format slab collection is available in 3 sizes, 20 colours and 2 surface finishes. To discover the entire collection, visit CEDIT website.
