Today marked a big milestone for Daily Overview as we passed the one million follower mark on Instagram. Here are the thoughts of our founder, Benjamin Grant, to mark the occasion:
Roughly seven years ago, I learned about an idea called the Overview Effect. It was simple - seeing the Earth from outer space had been proven to inspire feelings of awe and a desire to protect our one and only home. I believed in this idea and thought the world might benefit from more of this perspective. I could never have imagined how many of you would join me in that journey.
One million followers certainly means something different to everyone. To me it signifies that this platform is now poised to bring significant attention to and shine a spotlight on the most pressing issues of our time. I can’t help but think we currently find ourselves in a moment when we could use this perspective to push towards a better future.
Upon seeing the Earth from orbit, astronauts often sum up their feelings with the phrase “we’re all in this together.” Whether or not our species will start acting like that’s true is yet to be determined. Be it the pandemic that we currently face, the ongoing threat of a changing climate, or future challenges that nobody can predict, we must recognize that these crises are very much a product of our creation and therefore require us to work together resolve them. Let’s see what’s possible.
This photograph of Earth was captured yesterday from nearly one million miles away. I’m excited to see what tomorrow will hold and where else this project can go. Thank you for joining me so far, I hope this is just the beginning.
