Beijing Capital International Airport is the second busiest airport in the world, handling upwards of 100 million passengers in 2019. Hundreds of flights in and out of Beijing have been suspended in recent days due to a rise in new COVID-19 cases in the Chinese capital city. As of this morning, more than 1,200 flights have been cancelled at the city’s Capital and Daxing Airports, with many more expected to follow.

After nearly two months with no new infections, Beijing has reported several dozen cases in the past week — its largest spike since February. Officials have traced the outbreak to the Xinfadi Market (shown in second image), the largest wholesale food market in Asia. With vendors spread across 300 acres (121 hectares), Xinfadi is responsible for the sale of 70% of Beijing’s fresh vegetables, more than 80% of its fresh food and drinks, and all of its imported fruit.
