The new Black Lives Matter mural in Washington D.C., captured by the WorldView-3 satellite of Maxar Technologies. The mural spans two blocks of 16th street and was commissioned by the city’s mayor, Muriel Bowser. The installation has sparked both praise as a sign of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and also criticism from the DC chapter of the movement itself, calling the mural “performative" as Mayor Bowser has not met their demands to defund the city’s police force. Protests in the city have been ongoing for more than a week in response to the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
