Stepping into Lorna de Santos’ residential installation at Casa Décor in Madrid can be compared to entering the sinuous curves of a hollowed cave. Only cold stone walls have been replaced with buttery soft furnishings and the warm glow of a fireplace. Once inside its protective walls, the outside world begins to melt away. The internal monologue of never-ending to-do lists and mounting worries are replaced by a much quieter moment, where one can just simply appreciate watching warm light as it flickers up a curved wall. The space exudes a level of cosiness that is most comforting in today’s uncertainty – offering a moment of peace in face of anxiety.
The installation has been designed to encourage us to slow down in a world that feels evermoving and increasingly chaotic. Visitors become enveloped by the soft and calming sensory experience that follows the introspective Japanese philosophy of ‘Wabi-Sabi’, which highlights the beauty of our transient and imperfect world.

Lorna de Santos harnesses an aesthetic based on nature, allowing natural materials to encourage a more contemplative way of life. The continuous wall and floor cladding, made from a mix of cement and marine waste, wraps around like a virtual hug. Its imperfections are softly illuminated by the warm orange glow radiating from the backlit ceiling – major cosy vibes right there! A tree grows directly out of the curved window seat below – a moment where nature grows directly into the space. Timber is left raw, it’s veins and rough edges bringing warmth and dimension to the design. Leather seating, linen screens, ceramic pottery, and a large chunk of stone speak with confidence, their natural imperfections bringing the main visual appeal.
Despite their differences, the collection of pieces seamlessly meld together, bringing a sense of balance. De Santos ensured all furniture pieces float at the same height – 500mm from the finished floor. The accuracy of resulting sightlines enhance the sense of harmony, allowing us to be lulled into a state of relaxation.
