EARTH DAY 2020
This first picture of Earth was captured just yesterday by the DSCVR satellite, from roughly 918,000 miles away. Yesterday, and today, we find our planet in unprecedented circumstances. All of us, abundantly aware of, and fighting against an existential threat. We’ve also seen how our lack of activity during lockdown has given the environment a much-needed break. Perhaps we could learn from this moment. The history of how we endure this process, how it could serve as an opportunity to unite us and not divide us more, has not yet been written.
The second picture - Earthrise - was captured by Apollo 8 on Christmas Eve in 1968. This was the first time our species had ever seen the planet like this and is believed to have been one the catalysts the led to the first Earth Day in 1970. Today is the 50th Anniversary of that event. Perhaps, with this image, there was a realization that we are moving through the infinite blackness of space, all together. We always have been, but perhaps finding this new perspective in particular challenging moments can spark the much-needed movements and momentum that will help us work together to build a better future.
