Expert Airport Architect Demonstrates How Design Can Fix LaGuardia Airport

New York’s LaGuardia Airport is terrible, ranking dead last in a survey of America’s large airports. Architect Peter Ruggiero, the Design Principal of HOK’s Chicago office, is the airport design expert who’s been called in to fix LaGuardia.

In this fascinating presentation, Ruggiero first explains the different types of airport configurations…

…then uses trace paper, a marker and easily-understandable explanations to illustrate LaGuardia’s many problems…

…and finally shows you his inspired design solutions for them, seen below. Ruggiero has a talent for explaining problems so clearly that the solutions seem like “Oh, of course! How did we not see that before.” He also, refreshingly, keeps his demonstration free of pointless architecture-speak:

Ruggiero was once an adjunct professor of Architecture at Columbia. Sadly for a generation of students, he no longer teaches. That’s too bad, and I totally wish he’d been one of my design professors.
