Sydney-based artist and designer Evi O. presents her debut solo show ‘Fantasia’ during Sydney Contemporary with Paddington gallery Saint Cloche. Colour is a signature for both the art and design practice that Evi O. leads, with outcomes ranging from artworks, books, objet d’art and homeware pieces. Her exploration of forms, functions and executions are multi-dimensional, and bodies of work are presented with spatial experience in mind.

For Fantasia, Evi’s medium of choice is paint, with 2D colour-blocking shapes evoking stirring slices of life, some experienced, some observed. The topics are a melodic recurrence of high-strung joy and softer laments, referencing people encountered, places visited, and episodes sensed.

Such tales are conveyed through compositions of abstract shapes, using colour to amplify energy. Hot pink, bright orange and electric blue sit boldly beside one another in one painting, while another takes a more subtle tack comprising pale pink and olive green. Characters are symbolized through recurring abstract forms evocative of animals, objects and nature.
