San Cristóbal Volcano is the highest and one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. Standing at 5,725 feet (1,745 m), it is located in the northwest corner of the country near the city of Chinandega. San Cristóbal has been consistently active since 1997, including an eruption on Christmas Day in 2012 that caused hundreds of nearby residents to evacuate.
