Deforestation in Bolivia has primarily been driven by the expansion of mechanized agriculture and cattle ranching. It is seen here in Santa Cruz, immediately adjacent to untouched tracts of forest. While tree-clearing rates are now relatively stable at about 200,000 hectares (494,000 acres) a year, it is estimated that Bolivia lost 1,820,000 hectares (4.5 million acres) of forests from 2000 to 2010. Since today is #ArborDay, we hope this Overview will inspire you to plant a tree and help preserve the natural beauty of our one and only home.
