Mount Tambora is an active stratovolcano on Sumbawa, one of Indonesia’s Lesser Sundra Islands. On this day (April 17) in 1815, Mount Tambora blew its top in the world’s largest volcanic eruption since 181 AD, killing at least 10,000 people directly and another 70,000 indirectly through disease and starvation. So much rock and ash was expelled that the height of the volcano was reduced from 14,000 feet (4,267m) to 9,000 feet (2743m).
