This Overview captures the Banks Peninsula on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The landmass spans an area of approximately 1,150 square kilometres (440 sq mi) and encompasses two large harbours with many smaller bays and coves throughout. Geologically, the peninsula is made up of the eroded remnants of two large shield volcanoes that formed between 8 and 11 million years ago.
