Gibraltar International Airport is the primary aviation facility for the British overseas territory of Gibraltar and the neighboring areas of Spain such as Costa de Sol. Winston Churchill Avenue, the main road heading towards the border with Spain, crosses over the airport runway. Consequently, the road has to be closed every time a plane is landing or taking off.
