Remaining detached from the existing structure, Vonna Kitchen Showroom by PYO Arquitectos was designed with distance as its ethos; distance from the existing, distance between material, distance between spaces, distance between objects, and distance between times.

Located in Madrid, Spain the showroom is a circus of materiality. Cross-laid timber boards sit beneath a marble plinth that extends out to the façade of the building and meets with the shopfront. The plinth features two detached steps of different widths, dressed in a matching sandblasted marble.

The finishes palette is unified by the use of reoccurring materials and colours. Black steel balustrading meets the ground with brass footplates, hoop pine dresses cabinetry and diamond polished terrazzo tiles extend the length of the showroom.

Breaking away from the original envelope the façade glazing folds into the showroom, distancing itself from the street and welcoming clients in. It’s an introduction to space that lies beyond it. The interior is a striking intervention on the existing space where new materials meet existing. Defining lines of brass, timber and metal highlight the meeting of old and new. This purposeful interruption on the existing space ensures the buildings original story remains.

Distressed white walls and raw concrete are an insight to the demolition works that occurred. The architects focused on recovering and preserving imperfections on existing materials, “the suspended ceilings are dismantled and the building’s concrete skeleton appears. The surfaces are undressed revealing their folds, their superimposed accidents, allowing a glimpse of an excavated time.” While the contrast between polished and worn materials is clear insight the two architectural existences succeed in a singular space, to create an interior built on the distance between past and present.
