In recent days, rapidly spreading fires have been aided by dry vegetation, low humidity, and winds that have carried embers to new areas. Over the last week, more than 160,000 acres have been destroyed, forcing some 50,000 people from their homes. It is estimated that 3,500 structures such as dozens of homes seen here have been burned thus far. The state is still feeling the effects of an extended drought despite a recent wet winter. The fires are expected to continue to burn in the coming days.
