IKEA Launches Their Much Anticipated HAY Collection Today
It feels like years since the IKEA x HAY collaboration was announced, and today after plenty of waiting, the Ypperlig collection is finally here.
This expansive collection designed by Mette and Rolf Hay of over 60 objects such as stools, benches, tables, vases, and even candle holders, are each elegant and modern with an aesthetic that is still very true to Hay’s original studio work. With practically all of the pieces being such a reasonable price (nothing is priced over $600), many of them are certainly going to be tempting.
Here are a few items that have caught our eye already:
Hay even got to redesign the classic IKEA Shopping Bag (
$1.99)
The Ypperlig collection page on IKEA’s site also includes a very interesting video released earlier this summer detailing the production of the Monobloc Chair, which was originally envisioned as one solid piece. IKEA’s product development engineer Ricky Ericsson states in the video that they had to modify the original legs of the HAY design for greater stability, and their conversation conveys the fastidiousness and attention to care required when designing for large-scale production. Rolf Hay points out an interesting fact about how design modification differs when working with a giant retailer like IKEA: “When you stand in front of the machine and you’re surrounded by huge plastic molds and robots, you understand you need to get the job done fast because the machinery is extremely expensive."
