Situated on the River Elbe, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and eighth largest in the European Union. The city center, seen here, is situated around the Binnenalster, one of two artificial lakes built within its limits. Hamburg also contains the second largest port in Europe, which ships roughly 134 million tons of goods every year.
