The Super Bowl will be played tonight in Houston, Texas at NRG Stadium. Right next door, however, the city’s famed Astrodome still stands as a wonder of infrastructure and the world’s first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium. The complex opened in 1965, stands 18 stories tall, and has a dome with hundreds of skylights stretching 710 feet (220 m) in diameter. With more than three decades of use, the Astrodome served at times as the home stadium for Houston’s baseball, football, and even basketball teams.
