It’s no wonder the French can be so smug, you know. Just look at how much awesome comes out of that place. Seriously, you guys -it’s a bit ridick, no? Today we introduce you to the work of Julien Colombier – French artist, born in 1972, who lives and works in Paris.
A self-taught painter, Colombier works mainly with acrylics and oil pastels, with a preference for working on vast sheets of paper or directly on the wall – the more direct, the better. His evocative work is strongly influenced by the world of graffiti, Japanese art, Matisse and Keith Haring.
Colombier’s art incorporates various graphic techniques including chalk, paper, canvas and paint to produce shadowy, suggestive compositions that interweave flowers, plants and trees. Influenced by his background in skateboarding culture, Colombier often integrates his designs onto large scale murals and urban spaces.
“Painting for me is an act of appropriating reality. I press this wonderful and stupid world to try and extract some of its poetry and absurdity,” shares Julien.

The artistic world of Julien Colombier is dreamlike, magical and slightly disturbing at the same time. It is full of colourful jungles and tropical forest which play with the limits of decoration. The artist obsessively repeats his geometric and plant patterns, creating a hypnotic organic environment for the viewer.
His art is strongly influenced by biblical references such as the apocalypse, the flood, apparitions, divine lights, hell and paradise. Julien’s vision has resulted in art that feels uniquely his own. His work has a lyrical rawness – it feels brash and colourful, energetic, bold and beautiful.
With the upper echelons and large corporates desperate to get in on this cool-as-f*ck action, Colombier regularly collaborates with a whole bunch of elite brands such as Cartier and Chanel, by customising their stores. What a major, major dude.
