Is there anything better than delicious colour, beautiful product and superb styling come together in an amazing location? I’m so with you – the answer is – absolutely not! A decade ago, Vitra initiated a research project in collaboration with the Dutch designer Hella Jongerius to study the properties and possibilities of the colours, textures, finishes and materials in the company’s product portfolio. This long-term project resulted in the Vitra Colour and Material Library, which came to life during Milan Design Week 2016 in Vitra’s ‘Colour Machine’ installation at the temporary location CasaVitra. The spatial installation was dedicated to the Vitra Colour & Material Library, presenting Hella Jongerius’ insights and inspirations about colours, textiles and materials. The space was a colour wonderland where one could literally spin the colour wheel – an experience I never knew I always wanted to have, until it happened this year in Milan.

Up a set of industrial steel chair, via a Vitra nail colour bar (I know – how awesome!) the second level of CasaVitra was furnished with selected products from the Vitra Home Collection, providing a deliciously inviting space where visitors could linger and enjoy the atmosphere surrounded with sheer beauty.

Celebrating the 10 year collaboration with Jongerius, Vitra released a comprehensive new publication on the Dutch designer’s work as Art Director for Colours and Materials, which also had its debut in Milan. The book ‘I Don’t Have a Favourite Colour’ documents her decade-long efforts to establish the Vitra Colour and Material Library. Right next door to CasaVitra was a Vitra pop-up store which offered a selection of Vitra design objects and other limited-edition accessories.
