I don’t you know about you, but I definitely consider myself a bit of a Michael Anastassiades groupie. (I know, join the queue – right?). The Cyprus-born, London-based designer has been able to consistently achieve awe-inspiring, pure, minimalist-but-warm products and installations, and levels of perfection and uncompromised excellence which leave many others looking sloppy. Coinciding with Salone del Mobile 2016, Mr Anastassiades worked with Herman Miller — a brand I greatly admire — in what at first (to me) seemed like an unlikely pairing, although it unquestionably turned out to be one of the Week’s personal highlights.
Herman Miller and Michael Anastassiades unveiled The Double Dream of Spring at Corso Garibaldi 70 in Milan’s Brera district, an immersive interior installation which celebrated the debut of the inaugural collection of occasional furnishings created exclusively for the brand. True to his usual style, Anastassiades conceived an enigmatic environment inspired by the tradition of metaphysical surrealism and steeped in his own minimalist aesthetic.
For The Double Dream of Spring, Anastassiades recast the architecture of the Herman Miller showroom in Milan as a neutral, rational backdrop in which the furniture was displayed. In the space, his elegant and spare Spot stools and Stasis tables for Herman Miller were shown in walnut and white oak paired with a carefully considered shade of brass, complemented by monumental lighting sculptures created by Michael Anastassiades — the designer’s eponymous brand — especially for this installation.
It’s time you rolled your tongue back up and enjoyed the video that follows, which explains the design process and the philosophy of an incredibly impressive designer and his relationship with his clients. You’re welcome.
