Pop Art in Design, International Furniture Fair Singapore and Charles Eames in Hollywood

Monday

Originally organized by the Vitra Design Museum and currently on view at the MCA in Chicago, Pop Art Design traces the appeal and influence of the pop art spirit within the worlds of design and architecture in the 1960s and 70s. On view are works by designers such as Charles Eames, George Nelson, Ettore Sottsass, Achille Castiglioni, and Robert Venturi, paired with artworks from the same period to show the cross-pollination of ideas that was taking place between disciplines.

Tuesday

Highlighting the contemporary art of silversmithing through the work of 18 members of the Contemporary British Silversmiths, Silver Speaks: Idea to Object presents the processes by which form is created in silver while exploring the diverse applications of the material—from the experimental to the traditional, the sculptural to the functional.

Wednesday

Join Kazuyo Sejima, partner of SANAA, the Tokyo-based architecture and design firm she co-founded in 1995, for a discussion of the firm’s recent work. Their portfolio ranges from the residential to institutional scale, with projects that are known for formal and material innovations, like the sweeping organic landscape of the Rolex Learning Center (pictured above) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Thursday

The International Furniture Fair Singapore 2016 launches on Thursday. This year, the event will revolve around three main themes of exploration: Smart Living - furniture that goes beyond aesthetics and empowers users to live better; Convivial - how can design tap into emotions and encourage interaction and intimacy; and Design Forward - examining sources of inspiration and how to use them as catalysts to drive new ideas and fresh perspectives to create design forward pieces.

Friday

Photography was important for the Eameses, who took nearly 750,000 photos alongside their design career. Opening at the ADAM Museum, an exhibition of Charles Eames’ photographic series Movie-Sets captures the sets and natural settings featured in Billy Wilder’s films (the director was both a close friend and frequent collaborator of the couple). “Charles used to say they learned more about architecture from watching a Billy Wilder film than talking to most architects,” recalls Eames Demetrios, grand-son of the Eames and director of the Eames Foundation.

Saturday/Sunday

This weekend is the last chance to catch Century of the Child: Nordic Design for Children, an exhibition of design objects and environments created for children from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day—including furniture, toys, books, clothing, school architecture, playgrounds and public spaces, posters and advertising, health-care and safety products, art projects and aids for children.
