Crazy-Looking Russian Amphibian Vehicle

From Russia comes this bizarre-looking, go-anywhere vehicle:

Called the SHERP, it was developed by St. Petersburg mechanic Alexei Garagashyan, and it’s essentially an enclosed ATV more than it is a proper truck. What’s not clear from the photos is just how diminutive the thing is: It weighs only 2,866 pounds and is 3400mm (11.2 feet) long.

For scale, a 2016 Volkswagen Golf weighs 2,901 pounds and is 4255mm (14 feet) long.

We’ll overlay one on the other, to scale, so you can get a sense of the sizes:

The $49,000 vehicle runs a tiny 1.5-liter four cylinder diesel with just 44.3 horsepower, and tops out at 28 miles per hour. Obviously it’s designed for off-road use, and it can perform a very neat trick that the Golf could never hope to: If you’re driving one of these across the ice, and the ice breaks, it’s no problem, as you’ll see below.
