‘Cats’ will return to terrorize Broadway once more

Did you know that the naming of cats is a difficult matter? It isn’t just one of your holiday games. You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter when I tell you a cat must have Three. Different. Names.

Science save us: Cats is returning to Broadway this summer. The famed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that held New York City’s Winter Garden Theatre hostage for 18 years and almost 7,500 performances — the fourth-most in Broadway history — is using one of its nine lives to stage a comeback.

The first Cats revival on Broadway since the show’s Sept. 2000 closing will officially open at the Neil Simon Theatre on Aug. 2, with previews starting on July 14. Trevor Nunn will return to direct, while choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler — of Hamilton fame — will base the new show’s moves off the original.
