Bulldozers move in to clear sections of the Calais migrant camp

LONDON — Volunteers and aid groups spent several days moving residents of the refugee and migrant camp outside Calais over the weekend ahead of the arrival of French bulldozers.

Dozens of shelters and tents were moved from an area of the “Jungle” close to the motorway after authorities announced they wanted to clear a section of the space.

Residents were encouraged to move into a new row of containers with bunk beds that are designed to house 1,500 people, with women and children given priority. Many people resisted the move, however, fearing that the barbed wire fencing and barriers would act as a kind of prison.
