For nearly a year now, Yemen has been torn by a ferocious war pitting rebels, known as Houthis, and forces fighting for former President Ali Abdullah Saleh against fighters loyal to exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Some tribal militias have aligned with the Hadi government, others have sided with the Houthis, some strive for their own independence, and Al Qaeda and ISIS are both attempting to seize territory. Months of bombing by a Saudi-led coalition of Arab nations including Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, and Bahrain, with the support of the United States, have resulted in thousands of deaths and countless houses and buildings reduced to rubble. Yemen’s already-fragile infrastructure is under intense pressure, as the lack of security and supplies affect every individual and institution. The United Nations continues to attempt to bring about a meaningful cease-fire, to little effect. Gathered here are images from a deeply-fractured Yemen, taken over the past few months.
