When work first started on Cuphead, a new game that marries side-scrolling gameplay with 1930s-style American animation, Maja Moldenhauer went ahead and ordered a whole bunch of animation paper. Since the game was to be completely hand-drawn, in an attempt to emulate the process from the time, the paper was an integral tool. Moldenhauer, who served as an artist and producer on the game, thought that her initial paper order would be big enough to get the team through the development of Cuphead, and then get started on whatever the studio’s follow-up project ended up being.

On October 1st, Getty Images will amend its photo submission requirements to ban images that have been Photoshopped to make models look substantially thinner or larger. The policy update comes after a new law in France, which is set to take effect on the same day. The law will force magazine publishers to disclose whether commercial images have been retouched to change a model’s body shape.

The new laws in France will also require fashion houses to employ runway models sized 34 or higher (dress sizes 4 and 6 in the US and Britain, respectively). Models will need to obtain medical notes from their doctors verifying that they are not dangerously thin and maintain a healthy body mass index. Failure to provide the note will result in the…

The theme of this year’s exhibit is the emergence of visuals as the primary mode of communicating rather than the written word — or, as the exhibit’s guide puts it: “a basic shift in our culture, from text-based communication to one where images are the dominant tool of expression.” Going into the exhibit during its Monday night opening reception, I sort of thought it was going to be about memes or reaction GIFs or red baseball caps.

The US Navy is beginning to use Xbox 360 controllers to operate the periscopes on submarines, according to The Virginian-Pilot. The first submarine to get the new controller will be the USS Colorado, which goes into active duty in November. The Xbox controllers will later be added to other Virginia-class submarines.

Virginia-class submarines are getting the Xbox controller added to their integrated imaging systems, which will replace a complex-looking, helicopter-style control stick. These submarines are less expensive and more modern versions of the Seawolf-class submarines, which were commissioned in the late 1990s.

The innovation comes as the Navy’s response to feedback given by junior officers and sailors who said that the controls…
