Check out this incredible video of the entry, descent and landing of the Mars Perseverance Rover on February 18th. The footage begins about 7 miles (11 km) above the planet’s surface and ends with the rover’s touchdown in Mars’ Jezero Crater. For the next Martian year (about 687 Earth days), the Perseverance Rover will search for signs of ancient life and collect rock and soil samples to bring back to Earth. Who wants to see more images of Mars in the coming months?
Hundreds of saltwater evaporation ponds cover the south bank of Laizhou Bay in Shandong Province, East China. After being pumped to the surface from underground brines, salts are dried in these ponds and used to produce a variety of organic and inorganic chemicals and food additives. This particular area has China’s largest production capacity for bromine, an element found in seawater that is used in agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, flame retardants and more.
Lido Isle is a man-made island located in the harbor of Newport Beach, California. There are no commercial facilities on the island other than a small seasonal snack bar, and its only link to the surrounding city is a small bridge. It is solely residential, with approximately 1,800 inhabitants.
Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, has been the home of the Australian Open tennis tournament since 1988. Held annually during the last two weeks of January (though later this year due to COVID-19), the tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Today, Naomi Osaka clinched the women’s singles title over Jennifer Brady, and tomorrow Novak Djokovic will face off against Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles final.
The Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa, following the path of its namesake river roughly 200 miles (320 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Apart from its western coast, the nation is bordered on all sides by Senegal and is just 4,127 square miles (10,689 square km) in area — about one-third the size of Belgium. Some 2 million people live in The Gambia, many residing on the coast and in the capital city of Banjul.
Florence, the capital of Italy’s Tuscany Region, is seen here flanking the Arno River. Noted for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture, monuments, and museums, the city attracts millions of tourists every year. Among Florence’s many red terra-cotta roofs, we can see one of its most iconic sights — the Santa Maria del Fiore, or Florence Cathedral, which is home to the largest dome built of brick and mortar in the world.
Blockstudio-designed Apartment of Basta sits nestled within a quiet street of downtown Moscow. The studio speaks of the client’s desire to recreate the ambience of a Parisian flat they once lived in, explaining that the windows that perfectly frame Moscow’s winding streets, transported them back to Paris. So they went on to devise a scheme that contains the essence of the Parisian aesthetic without discrediting the modern building the apartment sits within.
The one thing that stands out when moving through this interior is the meticulous attention to detail and the impeccable craftsmanship. Seemingly simple pieces of joinery bring endless touches of elegance and sophistication.
One such moment occurs in the kitchen when a solid marble island bench begins to fold inward allowing space for a single person to sit comfortably under its chunky frame. The chamfered edges may seem like a humble intervention however, the impression it leaves is one of pure beauty. This attention to detail continues into the bathroom where a curving counter softly emerges from the wall. Instead of handles, small grooves are cut into the timber base creating a sleek, contemporary finish we love. The subtle juxtaposition between the warm timber and the polished surface of marble creates a special moment for an everyday activity – washing hands.
Oak parquet flooring unfolds like a golden carpet wrapping its way throughout the apartment. Stained a deep brown shade, it acts as the perfect counterbalance to a scheme that is dominated by light colours. Blockstudio has avoided an open-plan layout, instead intentionally separating the dining and kitchen areas to create a more traditional feel. A brass-framed glass partition sits at the threshold, its delicate structure bringing a new voice to the otherwise solid language of the kitchen.
In a largely neutral scheme, art becomes the main source of colour, bringing with it the unique personality of the occupants. “The furniture and lighting have been selected so as it highlights the juxtaposition of textures and materials that are diverse in colour and feel,” Blockstudio outline. “But the main focus of the space is on the paintings and collector’s design pieces. While some of them come from the hostess’ collection, others have been sourced from a Moscow AlinaPinsky Gallery and carefully selected to add to the feeling of transcendence of time and space.”
The Colorado River and the trajectory of its current flow were formed roughly 5 million years ago. Due to tectonic activity, the Colorado Plateau continued to rise from 5 million to 2.5 million years ago, thereby shifting the direction of the river. With its new path, the river began to erode the area in present-day Arizona now known as the Grand Canyon. The canyon is situated just a few miles south of the river section captured in this Overview.

Beeline by NYC architecture firm SO-IL is an installation that occupies the entire MAAT museum, designed by the celebrated British architect Amanda Levete in 2016, located on the riverfront in the historic district of Belem, Lisbon. The large scale, multi-storey architectural intervention was the first exhibition to open in the museum since its forced closure due to the pandemic.
A special clandestine entrance has been created for the exhibition. This city facing the entrance, through the museum’s loading dock, plays with physical space to redefine and re-engage the local residents with the museum. It also creates a direct path through the museum to the quayside. Designed to house Maat MODE, a six-month experimental public programme of talks and events, the intervention “not only transforms the way visitors enter and experience MAAT”, explains Florian Idenburg co-founder of SO-IL, “but also challenges the implied hierarchies of spaces in a traditional museum and provide flexibility for an ever-evolving organisation.”
Textile of varying transparency is stretched over architectural structures to form enclosed and open interactive spaces to draw people in as they wander through the passageway. The structures range from sounds capsules, video rooms, elevated pathways, stage sets, hammocks to even a trampoline. Playful and engaging, the installation fosters discourse around the conventions and formal identities of cultural institutions.
Beatrice Leanza, the executive director of MAAT sees the future of galleries and museums evolving to be more agile and resilient. This timely exhibition finds visitors and the institution learning and growing together. Leanza describes Maat MODE as a “transformative gesture that repurposes the museum into a polyfunctional civic arena where public life is debated, probed, challenged and possibly inspired towards a more inclusive and equitable making of the future.”
Running alongside Beeline is an exhibition showcasing some of SO-IL’s short term installations from the last decade. Titled Currents – Temporary architectures by SO–IL, the exhibition interrogates the nature of architecture and shows how SO–IL’s temporary projects have informed their more permanent works.
Beyond their own work, the architects also designed 15 mobile and reconfigurable art storage units scattered throughout the space. Featuring intimate archival works and materials from a collection of artists for The Peepshow – Artists from the EDP Foundation Portuguese Art Collection.
French designer Sam Baron developed a friendly communication system in line with new health and safety regulations. The gentle and unique design language flows through the building, using common bricks, reflective surfaces, and personal graphic language to remind visitors of how to respect the current rules.
Beatrice Leanza and SO–IL have marked a new era for the Amanda Levete-designed MAAT with this mammoth yet ethereal 1390 square metre intervention. Respect.
